You click Forgot Password, the page says the email is on its way, and nothing appears in your inbox. Before assuming it was not sent, it is worth knowing what actually happens in between, because the most common reason has nothing to do with delivery.
The path the message takes
Requesting a reset generates a single-use link tied to your account and valid for a limited window. That link is sent to the address on your account and nowhere else, which is why the page confirms a reset was requested rather than telling you whether that address exists. Confirming which addresses have accounts would let anybody test a list of emails against the platform.
The message is then handed to a mail provider, authenticated so receiving servers can verify it genuinely came from us, and accepted or rejected by your mail host. Rejection is loud and rare. Acceptance is the normal case.
Accepted is not the same as visible
Here is the part that catches people, and it is worth knowing because it applies to far more than password resets.
Gmail groups messages into conversations using the subject line and the participants. If you have ever received a message with the same subject from the same sender, a new one can be filed onto that existing conversation rather than arriving as a new item. When that older conversation is read and archived, the new message lands in an archived thread. It was delivered. It is in your account. It is simply not in the inbox, because the thread it joined is not in the inbox.
Searching finds it immediately, which is why this is invisible to anybody who searches and maddening for anybody who scrolls.
Reset messages now carry headers that explicitly mark each one as a new conversation rather than a reply, so they arrive on their own rather than joining anything. Any message where a missed delivery has consequences is treated the same way.
If it still has not turned up
Search your mail for the sender rather than scrolling the inbox, and check the spam folder once. Between those two you will find almost everything.
If nothing turns up, the contact form reaches a person. Worth knowing: account and security messages cannot be switched off in notification preferences, for exactly this reason, so this is never a settings problem.
